Best Skyrim Mods: Ever since Bethesda released Skyrim in 2011, the game has recorded countless hours of gameplay. And despite all the additional content, you have probably played the game so many times that there aren’t really any surprises left for anyone. But as always, there are mods to the rescue. Bethesda’s encouragement of fanmade appropriations has seen tireless efforts resulting in thousands of Skyrim mods, both official and otherwise. Thanks to those, you can have as much new incorporated in Skyrim as you want. Well, almost. For mods, as amazing as they are, have to be used according to the strict guidelines shared by their creators. Nevertheless, they are up and available online, so all you really need to do is choose. To help you choose among the countless, here are our picks of the best Skyrim mods that you can apply to TES 5.
Before We Begin
Mods need to be downloaded and applied with caution, and the installation instructions they come with, need to be exercised to avoid crashing. Some mods enhance the overall game, working well with others, while some may be contradictory to others in an application. The best way to go about it is to read the guidelines provided with each mod carefully, and you should have no problems. Let us now take a look at the best Skyrim mods 2017.

Best Skyrim Mods Of All Time
Skyrim mods are available in every possible avatar, ranging from the kind of changes they make to the platform they work best on. This makes it rather difficult to choose the best of the best. The choices for our best Skyrim mods provided below span a few categories, and we will expand and update this list regularly. So let’s get a move on.
1. A Quality World Map
Best Skyrim Mods: A List Not to Miss
If you are new to Skyrim, this map mod for Skyrim will make figuring out routes across the vast map much easier than it is to do on the vanilla map. This particular mod has been updated many times to add new improvements to add better textures and to help you find hidden routes without any troubles. You can find this one for the PC and the Xbox One. Do make sure to check the compatibility section before downloading.
2. Phenderix Magic Evolved
More magic means more power in Skyrim, and this is one of the best Skyrim magic mods that you can download to begin experimenting with more moves than you have ever imagined. By tucking into around 400 new spells on top of what is available, you will be able to do cast your enemies through space-time, protect yourself from them, and summon most of the creatures available. It also allows you to exercise more roleplaying options. Download it from the PS4 from here.
3. Alternate Start – Live Another Life
This is one of the best Skyrim mods for those who have already played through the game and want to experience something new. With the Alternate Start- Live Another Life mod for Skyrim, you will be able to avoid the beginning that you must already know like the back of your hand and experience a fresh start. It also comes with a bunch of new character customizations options to give it another dimension. The PC version is available for download here.
4. Skyrim Script Extender
The SKSE, as it is popularly known, is irrefutably one of the best Skyrim mods that you need to download now. This is a mod that is needed before installing other mods to ensure that all of them function as required. What makes it so essential is that it lends a serious enhancement to the scripting capabilities of Skyrim to make sure the game handles well while reading all the new commands imposed upon it. In short, it is the mod to install all mods. Find it here.
5. Winterhold Rebuild
Winterhold in Skyrim is perpetually in ruins, but if you have ever wished for a way to correct the situation, then this is the best Skyrim mod for a quest driven upgrade. With Winterhold Rebuild, you can literally rebuild Winterhold from the ground up, fixing the great houses by assisting Avis, the lead carpenter of the once-glorious city who can be found at specific times. At the end of it all, there will be a glorious player home waiting for you to inhabit. You can download this Skyrim PC mod from here.
6. Interesting NPCs
Want to add a little more color to the world of Skyrim with new NPCs to interact with? The Interesting NPCs mod allows you to have a bunch of new voiced NPCs and followers, who are each completely immersed into the story. The brilliant dialogue choices allow you to role-play with them, and some of them come with their own motivations. For instance, there are over 15 NPCs that you can choose from if you want to marry! Find it for the PC here.
7. Even Better Quest Objectives
Many of Skyrim’s quests are shrouded in ambiguity, and half the fun (or frustration) lies in figuring them out. But like them or not, they are part and parcel of the game, proving to be rewarding in the end. However, there are those that can be a bit of a spoil simply because of the bad description and hard to follow quest markers. These can be given a considerable uplift with the help of the EBQO, which edits those quests for more clarity. You can download it for the PS4 from here. It is arguably one of the best Skyrim mods of 2017 for sure.
8. Static Mesh Improvement Mod
One of the best Skyrim graphics mods that you can get your hands on, the SMIM greatly improves thousands of meshes placed throughout the world of Skyrim, thereby giving the game a very impressive visual upgrade. It doesn’t do much more than making the game look massively better, so you don’t have to worry about hidden scripts to alter the vanilla Skyrim. This can be found for the Xbox One here.

The base Skyrim game is undoubtedly one of the best experiences you can find, but choosing the best Skyrim mods is worse than trying to find a needle in a haystack. Our list here consists of certain essentials that span gameplay, visuals, and general enhancements for a slightly (read: much) altered experience to spice things up a little. After all, who doesn’t want to have better quest aids and marry NPCs? Before you install them, however, be doubly sure of the instructions and compatibility notes. It’s wednesday and the SkyrimMod Forge is back, bringing you some of the best mods produced by the modding community dedicated to improving The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
It’s already the second week of January, and while we’re all still waiting to see if Bethesda will keep it’s promise of releasing the Creation Kit (that will increase the modding potential of the game exponentially) this month, the community is still using whatever it can to improve the game over the original. There already are nearly 6300 mods available for download, and that’s just counting the ones that I could personally find.
The purpose of this column is to help those that may be a little disoriented with the size and scope of what the Skyrim modding community offers. You’ll find here on DualShockers every Wednesday.
But, as every week, it’s time to let the mods do the talking, so without further ado, head past the cut for this week’s highlights.
I love swords. I collect them, both in my real life and in games, and Skyrim is no exception. That’s why this incredible mod by JaySuS put a big smile on my face.
It includes 38 new weapons (mostly swords and daggers, but there’s also an axe) that honestly put the original ones to shame in quality and detail. I really can’t praise the craftsmanship gone into modeling and texturing this mod enough. You should really check it out for yourself here. They’re well balanced with the game and don’t replace any stock weapon too, what’s not to love?
Kit Rae Collection V2
If you prefer blades that fit a more fantasy-ish theme this mod by BOB666 will possibly satisfy your needs. It converts to Skyrim a number of weapons initially created for Oblivion by yoyohobo665, reproducing the rather popular Kit Rae swords.

While I’d love to see them with a little less saturation (especially in the gold parts), they’re still well made. You can check them out here.
Real Ice_Dull And Half Dull-Half Ice
Skyrim is a northern province and there’s a lot of ice. The problem is that the default ice could definitely look better. This is exactly what this mod by Yuril fixes, turning the ice in the game into a sight to behold with lovely reflections. You can find it here in several versions. My personal favorite is 2K Real Ice V2_Parallax, but feel free to experiment to find your own.
Realistic Lighting Without Post-Processing
Many people use shader injectors or other post-processing programs in order to give the game a more realistic or otherwise pleasing lighting. The bad news about that are that it impacts performance. The good news are that it isn’t really necessary. This mod by 747823 and Pluto tampers directly with the lighting settings of the game to increase realism and correct some honestly weird design choices made by Bethesda. Days are brighter, nights and interiors are darker (torches finally matter) and everything looks arguably better.
The authors provide several options here, allowing you to use the whole mod or just parts of it and to find the setting more fitting to your taste.
Ashara Romantic Outfit for CBBE
The stock wedding dress in Skyrim is… umh… a rug sack, really. I’m not quite sure what style it tries to imitate, but it fails quite badly.
This mod by Ashara replaces that travesty with a much more fetching dress. The cleavage may be a big large for some (no, not for me), but the model and the textures are just lovely. You can find it here and complement it with your favorite necklace for a look that would surely please old dear Coco.
Nightingale retex – Black Sacrament – craftable ninja armor
Despite the fact that this beautiful armor set by AmethystDeceiver is defined a “Ninja Armor”, I find it perfectly fitting with the Elder Scrolls setting. In addition to that it’s beautiful, highly detailed and I find it even quite sexy. It’s a retexture of the stock Nightingale armor, but doesn’t replace it, which is an added bonus. You can find it here.
Capes for Armors
There’s a rumor floating around stating that Bethesda had several cape models ready for Skyrim, but decided not to implement them because the animations didn’t work well enough.
Personally I have a bit of a gripe about games with a medieval or fantasy setting that don’t include capes, so this mod by Eferas and Phate3 is perfect to fit my taste. It does exactly what it says on the tin, adding a cape to several of the armor models included in the game. The bad news are that the mod only adds the cape to male armor for now, the good news are that female capes will come with a future update.
You can find it here.
Phenderix Magic Evolved Skyrim
Midas Magic – Spells in Skyrim
If you feel that Skyrim doesn’t have enough spells to play with, this mod by Xilver might make your day. It adds more than 40 new spells to the game, most of which are quite well balanced.
Some of the new spells can be also used very creatively, which makes the whole process a whole lot of fun. Midas Avalanche is my favorite by far. You can try it too by downloading it here.
On a side note, the clip above uses one of the cover songs by Malukah. She really has a lovely voice. I especially love her Fairytale and The Age of Aggression. I can’t wait to hear her Age of Oppression, even if my Imperial heart somehow cries at the idea of her beautiful voice applied to such an ominous and dishonorable song. Down with Ulfric, the killer of kings!

Phenderix Magic Evolved – 70 New Spells
This mod by Phenderix is another collection of 70 spells that will radically enlarge your magical repertoire. They seem to be quite a bit overpowered at times, so I use only the ones i find balanced and leave the others in the menu. The slow and stop time ones are really fun to use, among others. If you want to give them a try you can download the mod here.

And that’s it for this episode. I hope you found something useful to improve your game. As usual remember that full and exclusive credit for the mods listed above goes to their talented authors. Do come back next week for more mods at the Skyrim Mod Forge.
